Course Overview

Mental health or mental wellbeing is defined by the World Health Organisation as “a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and in able to make a contribution to his or her community”.

The spectrum of mental health can range from having good mental health to having a mental illness. A person can move up and down the spectrum throughout their life depending on what they are experiencing and their resilience.

Components contributing to a person’s mental health and wellbeing are:

  • Health
  • Relationships
  • Feeling safe and secure now and for the future
  • Standard of living
  • Sense of achievement
  • Having a purpose
  • Feeling part of a community

A person with good mental health has a positive state of wellbeing that includes feeling good and functioning well. They will be in control of their emotions as well as good cognition and the ability to interact positively with people they come into contact with, enabling them to thrive in the workplace or studies at home, with family and other relationships.
